This book is for the specialist researcher and collector .
This book is a facsimile reprint of the original arsenal report of the 1874 equipment boards for infantry and horse equipment. I have found it useful in my studies but the general reader has no need for this.

How to Climb: Big Walls
Published in Paperback by Falcon Publishing Company (June, 1994)
Author: John Long
Average review score:

Good reference
The best way to learn to aid and climb big walls with the exception of going out there and doing it. A good reference for beginners. The illustrations are a little corny. Looked like a throw back to the 1970's. Illustrations probably lifted from "Climbing Big Walls," edited by Mike Strassman.

I am a bike messenger and I wish I'd had this book when I started the job. From fixing a flat to the most difficult repairs this book has it all.

How to Rock Climb: Gym Climb
Published in Paperback by Falcon Publishing Company (October, 1994)
Author: John Long
Average review score:

A must for anyone interested in indoor rock gym climbing.
There are only two books that focus on this exciting new activity, this one and "Mock Rock: Guide to Indoor Climbing." I have them both and have read them both. There is no comparison, considering both cost and content. John's book is half the price and covers this very enjoyable form of climbing in a thorough easily read manner. "Mock Rock" spends the last half on interviews with people who climb in gyms. It is mostly fluff. If I ran an indoor climbing gym, I'd stock Long's $6 book. It's all you need to learn about this great new sport

Hungry for Heaven: Rock 'N' Roll & the Search for Redemption
Published in Paperback by Intervarsity Press (June, 1995)
Author: Steve Turner
Average review score:

Insightful as to the rock movement's spiritual concerns.
This is the first book i've read in quite some time written by a Christian author on the subject of rock music that's actually fair to the people it's talking about.

Steve Turner understands the rock culture from the 50s thru '95, and he understands not just WHAT rock stars have done to wet their spiritual appetites over the past 40 years, but WHY. He goes piece by piece thru many of the different genres, starting with Elvis and ending with pagan techno, and shows us the thought process that went into the construction of many of the artists' philosophies on who they are, why they exist, whether or not God exists and if He does, whether or not He cares. Although most of the stars thru the years have never, as U2 put it, "found what they're looking for," and have lived excessive lives in the absebnce of any true from of religious satisfaction, the most interesting thing to read about is all they went thru to find their own identities and most still left with unanswered questions in the end.

Recommended for all interested in the rock culture and it's religious roots, but most of all recommended for those in the Church who rail against rock music, having limited research from reading too many Christian authors with slanted views.

I Read the News Today
Published in Hardcover by Rowman & Littlefield Publishing (28 May, 1994)
Author: Fred Fogo
Average review score:

Book looks at Lennon's role as symbol of social change
Fogo perceptively explores why Lennon's death generated such an enormous outpouring of grief and journalistic commentary, lifting Lennon from the ranks of pop music heroes to the level of social archetype. Drawing on Victor Turner's idea that society evolves through social drama--a tear or disruption of the social fabric followed by reintegration that creates new social forms--Fogo asserts that Lennon became a symbol of a generation alienated from "straight" society in the sixties and that has been searching for reintegration ever since. Lennon's transformation from rebel-poet to house-husband and parent is viewed as representative of a generation attempting to create a new definition of adulthood. This clearly-written book is important not so much because it shows Lennon's significance ranged well beyond pop music, but because of its well-thought-out analysis of ,the sixties cultural revolution and its impact on people's lives.

I Wish Tonight
Published in Hardcover by Lion Pub (December, 1999)
Authors: Lois Rock and Anne Wilson
Average review score:

A must for your child's library!!
"I Wish Tonight" is a beautifully written and illustrated book. The rhythmic verse is uplifting and inspirational with drawings depicting people of all races living together in harmony. And there is a great message... "We'll tell then that nothing can be bought or sold: In the land that I wish for no one will need gold..." -And my favorite- "...And let's make a great plan: that together we'll mend Anything that is broken, and carefully tend Everything in the world, keep it safe to the end... Soon, no one will know where the wastelands have been: The trees will grow tall and the deserts turn green, The air will blow clear and the rain will fall clean, And in shimmering streams silver fish will be seen"

Some (like my husband :)might think that it's too utopian and unreal...but I think that children ought to start out this way!! And hopefully never lose sight of our potential. How sad would it be for a four-year-old to see the world through cynical and jaded eyes? If you want a more grounded message with a storyline in the same spirit of open-minded acceptance, another great book is "Herb, the Vegetarian Dragon" (and you don't need to be vegetarian to appreciate it!!)

This book is an absolute treasure. I bought two copies of "I Wish Tonight". One for my son to look at now while he is still ripping books (he's only 16 months) and one to preserve for when he's older. It's that good!!
